Symbolism in art (Botticelli)

Movements like the Pre-Raphaelites and Vanidas use symbolism heavily in their work as a kind of visual language to convey the message or mood of the painting often as visual metaphors, for example, Botticelli's Venus and Mars;

The image depicting Mars (the god of war) having been seduced by Venus (the god of love) has fallen to sleep and in this act is robbed of his weapon. The message love conquers hate?

Flowers, gods, daemons, fruit, skulls, instruments, water, ornaments where all symbols which convey part of a message. Vanitas relied solely on these mechanisms in their paintings. 

I decided to look a little further into symbols and
found little sites that had a basic knowledge of the contemporary meanings for certain things like flowers
